Analysis of failures in transmission lines

By: Claudio Gajardo.

Metrycom is an Israeli company, that carries 12 years on the market, presenting solutions for the electricity market. The company goal is to design equipment that contribute to the operation and proper functioning of the transmission lines HV and MV.

Under this scenario, Metrycom it focused on details related to: monitoring of electrical variables, alarms and fault detection lines, flashover on insulators, etc. Where the main advantage is to make wireless systems, that allowed for a scan task predictive and preventive, More precisely and less expensive than traditional methods.

For this we can mention two key systems this company, to help resolve relevant issues in the operation of the transmission lines, that under study, are common difficulties presented by users.

System fault detection lines MV and HV, since 4 until 110 KV. Each sensor Metrycom 5000 It allows current measurement, voltage, phase angle, THD, entre otros, including its waveform sampling 4khz. The sampling rate allows a detailed analysis of typical faults of a distribution line. It has algorithms for fault detection, shorts and location, download high impedance (leakage trees, partial shorts, etc). This tool is ideal for expert monitoring of the distribution network.

Advantages:

Easy to install equipment, It feeds on the network to count 1A, full functionality from 2A.

calibers from 6 a 32 mm.

Communication between the sensors and the hub is via radio 915 Mhz, allows coverage up to 25km.

The hub can be connected via Ethernet to an existing network or cellular pathway.

The software resides on server factory, local application delivery operation information.

But nevertheless, It is assessed in detail, especially engineering, software and communication systems. Everything will depend on the needs of the end user.

Prediction System flashover. This system enables prediction of partial leakage of insulators, since its inception early, allowing prediction of failure, alerting requirement for increased contamination of insulators. The system works using the wire guard present on the line. Each sensor allows monitoring of all insulators within 1 km.

Advantages:

Easy to install equipment, minimum equipment in the tower.

Communication between the sensors and the hub is via radio 915 Mhz, allows coverage up to 25km.

The hub can be connected via Ethernet to an existing network or cellular pathway.

The software resides on server factory, local application delivery operation information.

There is no technology to perform this same prediction.

This technology allows us to prevent serious incidents in transmission lines, by continuous measurements, secure communications and management tools that perform the respective analysis, in order to determine and detect a possible future failure.

There are applications developed in the world and in Chile, which we mention below:

Chile; Transelec is in the process of testing and study of a team Metrycom 4000, where subjected to measurement equipment, different lines, to preventive analysis of flashover in their lines. The equipment can operate in simple circuits, double circuit, etc. Insulators usually soiled by pollution, particulate accumulation, saline environments, geography or aggressive processes, etc. This causes the isolator becomes a conductive element, finally causes leakage current, causing power outage or loss of supply to end users. The Metrycom system detects this conduction insulator and prevents increase, timely warning and times determined, for a maintenance of these insulators is made.

Brazil; large country, where lines over long distances, different populations and places where access is limited. For this case Metrycom system launched 5000 to detect flaws, calculate the distance where the problem occurred, all configured in a centralized software. The objective of giving effect to the work of operators, to centralize and define the focus of the work of operation, for a correction work on time and deliver power continuously. Many of the sectors of this line are inaccessible rural areas, distances very extensive lines, so timely detect any failure or probability of failure at a precise time, was what the end user equipment found with Metrycom.
